Mustela Skincare

by Sian Bitner Kearney:

As a mother and as a woman, great skincare is usually at the top of my list of priorities. So when I was asked to review some of Mustela, a leading skincare brand for both children and mothers, I immediately said yes. Experts in the field of skincare since 1950, Mustela offers a complete skincare line to address all of the immediate and changing needs of newborns, children, mothers and mothers-to-be.

The company sent me two products to review, their Stelatopia Moisturizing Cream for dry and eczema prone skin and their SPF 50+ Broad Spectrum Mineral Sunscreen Stick. First, let me begin by saying that these were perhaps two of the best products from their line that they could have sent for my review. My son, being a long-time sufferer of eczema and dry skin and myself having lived through a double diagnosis of skin cancer, we were certainly armed and ready to put these products to the test. Here are the results:

Stelatopia Moisturizing Cream: This cream has been an absolute miracle for my son’s skin. While the winter months usually keep his eczema at bay, by early spring he is always plagued with those dry, itchy bumps all over his skin. I have been having him apply the lotion daily to his driest areas (elbow, wrists, ankles and back) after showers or in the morning before dressing. After nearly a month of use, I am happy to report that thus far, not a single sign of his eczema has surfaced. In addition, my son says the fragrance doesn’t bother him. At first he was apprehensive to try the lotion, fearing that it would be too girly smelling and ruin his 11 year-old swag, but luckily for us both, the fragrance is nearly undetectable and fades within seconds of application. The texture is a bit thick at first, but easily melts into skin without leaving behind a sticky, greasy residue.

SPF 50+ Broad Spectrum Mineral Sunscreen Stick: Even though the description of this product says it is for the face and bodies of babies and children, I’ll admit that I called first dibs on this one. While I usually remember to spray down my son with sunscreen prior to lengthy outdoor events, like most mothers, I tend to completely forget about myself. I used to try to carry around a bottle of sunscreen in my purse, but they were bulky and took up too much space and so I usually left them sitting on a shelf at home. This little stick is total genius. Not only does it provide 50+ SPF coverage, a must for someone like me who has already had two skin cancer scares, but it’s also small enough to pop into even the tiniest of bags. With my son’s lacrosse games in full effect as well as a few family cookouts, having this stick at my disposal is a total lifesaver. Admittedly, I don’t usually apply it to my face, I have a special moisturizer I use daily for that area; however I do use it for quick applications to my arms, hands, legs, and even my chest. The formula does go on a little white looking at first, but soon blends perfectly into the skin. Much like the moisturizer, I noticed on a faint fragrance which disappeared rather quickly, and it felt more like a moisturizer to me than the typical sticky sunscreen.

Overall, I would have to say that I highly recommend these two products. While they are a bit pricier than your average drug store product, a little goes a long way so they’re sure to last you a while, and the results, at least for my son and I, are worth every extra penny
